MIL-C-83723 Series III

A medium-size environment-resistant circular connector. With bayonet, threaded, and quick-disconnect coupling all available, it is widely used for panel mount, box mount, and line-to-line connections on aircraft.

Standard

What MIL-C-83723 Series III is

MIL-C-83723 Series III is the specification for medium-size environment-resistant circular connectors. Amphenol supplies this specification through the Matrix product line, using crimp rear-release contacts.

Coupling can be chosen from bayonet, threaded, and quick-disconnect, which leaves a wide margin to match the mounting conditions within one specification. Parts can be ordered by military number or by the Amphenol/Matrix part number.

Environmental sealing is built from individual contact seals, a silicone elastomer interfacial seal with a raised barrier around each pin, a shell-to-shell seal, and an insert-to-shell seal. The triple-web grommet construction keeps the seal effective across a range of wire outside diameters.

Drawings often specify these as M83723/xx. Different coupling methods do not mate with each other, so the number has to be checked.

Design

Environmental sealing construction

  • Individual contact sealsDetails · tap to expand

A seal on each contact closes off the path moisture would otherwise take along the wire entry.

  • Silicone elastomer interfacial sealDetails · tap to expand

An interfacial seal with a raised barrier around each pin, which maintains insulation between pins when mated.

  • Shell-to-shell and insert-to-shell sealsDetails · tap to expand

The joint between the connector halves and the insert joint are each sealed, giving two barriers.

  • Triple-web grommetDetails · tap to expand

A grommet construction designed to keep the seal effective across a wide range of wire outside diameters.

  • Captive coupling nutDetails · tap to expand

The coupling nut is captive to the shell, which prevents it from being taken apart unintentionally.

Q&A

Frequently Asked Questions

My drawing says M83723/86 — what part is that?

A threaded straight plug. Even among straight plugs the numbers differ: bayonet coupling is M83723/75 · 76, and the RFI grounding version in threaded coupling is M83723/91 · 92. Send us the number exactly as it appears on the drawing and we will confirm the matching part.

Do bayonet and threaded parts mate with each other?

No. Different coupling methods do not mate. If the connector on the other side is already fixed, send us its P/N as well so we can point you to the right part.

What is the difference between MIL-C-83723 and MIL-DTL-38999?

Both are circular connector specifications, but they differ in class and application. MIL-C-83723 Series III is a medium-size environment-resistant type used broadly for aircraft panel and box mounting, while MIL-DTL-38999 is the higher specification aimed at harsher environments. They do not mate with each other, so the specification called out on the drawing has to be followed.

Are stainless steel shells available?

Yes. Aluminum and passivated stainless steel are both available. If the application involves salt spray or corrosion, tell us the conditions and we will point you to the right version.

I need a quick-disconnect with a lanyard — is there one?

M83723/68 · 69 is the quick-disconnect plug with lanyard. The version without a lanyard is M83723/66 · 67.

Can I get a C of C with the order?

Yes. We issue one for every order — what it covers and the original certificate are on the Authorized Distributor certification page.
