What MIL-DTL-38999 is
MIL-DTL-38999 is the U.S. Department of Defense specification for subminiature circular connectors. It was created to carry signal and power reliably where vibration, shock, moisture, salt spray, and EMI are constant, and it has become the de facto standard on military aircraft, missiles, satellites, naval vessels, and ground weapon systems.
The specification is divided into Series I, II, and III by coupling method. "D38999", the form that appears throughout procurement documents, is the part number prefix used by parts built to this specification.
The older MIL-C-38999 designation has been superseded by MIL-DTL-38999. Drawings often still carry the MIL-C marking.
Connectors marked only as "38999 type" are sold commercially. They are not the same thing as MIL qualified product and cannot be used where the procurement requirement is MIL-DTL-38999. There is a second distinction inside the genuine lines as well — the standard range covered by the specification, and options the manufacturer supplies under its own designation only. The Amphenol catalog states that PCB terminations, high-density (HD) inserts, and EN3645 Quadrax and grounded arrangements are not QPL certified. Where a procurement document calls for QPL-listed product those options cannot be used, so send us the P/N and we will confirm whether it is standard range or an Amphenol designation.

Different coupling methods do not mate with each other. The P/N prefix on the drawing tells them apart.

Series III (Tri-Start) is the one most often specified in defense procurement. If you are not sure which series you have, send us the P/N from the drawing and we will identify it. MIL-DTL-38999 is built by several divisions within Amphenol, so the same series carries different product line names — Amphenol Aerospace calls it Tri-Start, Amphenol Socapex calls it TV and CTV. Parts built to the same specification mate with each other, but drawings sometimes call out a particular manufacturer's P/N, so passing the specified P/N to us exactly is the more accurate route. For a new design where size and weight are the constraint and no specification is imposed, Amphenol's subminiature 2M line is also worth considering — but 2M is not MIL-DTL-38999 qualified, so it cannot substitute where the drawing calls out D38999.
Tri-Start
Series III — Tri-Start
Qualified to MIL-DTL-38999 Rev. J.
Tri-Start is the Series III connector that uses triple-start thread coupling. Metal-to-metal mating, grounding fingers, and electroless nickel plating give it its EMI shielding performance, and it covers everything from general use to harsh environments.
Shells are available in aluminum, stainless steel, Class K firewall, and composite. A Clutch-Lok option is available for high-vibration environments.

Dielectric strength falls as altitude rises. Aerospace applications have to be checked against the operating altitude. Recommended AC and DC service voltages are in volts.

These are the codes that go in the shell material and plating position of the P/N. A different plating means different conductivity, corrosion resistance, and applicable specification.
JT / LJT
Series I · II — JT / LJT
Used for maintaining existing equipment, or where the drawing calls out bayonet coupling.
LJT is Series I and JT is Series II, and both also meet MIL-C-27599. They use five key/keyway polarization and a bayonet lock coupling, so they mate and unmate quickly.
Shells are impact-extruded or machined aluminum, and the standard plating is cadmium over nickel. Hermetically sealed receptacles come with carbon steel or stainless steel shells.
Crimp rear-release contacts apply to the JT-R and LJT-R lines. Solder, PCB, wire wrap, thermocouple, fiber optic, and coaxial / triaxial / twinaxial contact options are also available. Of these, PCB termination is the one the Amphenol catalog marks as "PCB version are not QPL certified. Amphenol designation only" — it is not standard range but an Amphenol designation product, so it cannot be used where the procurement document requires QPL-listed parts.

Shell styles include wall mounting receptacle, box mounting receptacle, straight plug, jam nut receptacle, 90° plug, and solder mounting receptacle.
Backshells
M85049 backshells — a separate item behind the connector
A backshell is the part that grips the cable behind the connector. It seals the cable against moisture and contamination, terminates the shield to block electromagnetic and radio-frequency noise, and in band-clamped styles it takes on strain relief as well.
It is ordered as a separate item from the connector. Buying the connector does not bring the backshell with it, so confirming both at the quotation stage works out better for lead time.
M85049 backshells are used not only with D38999 Series I, II, III, and IV but also with other circular connector specifications such as MIL-DTL-5015, MIL-DTL-83723, and MIL-DTL-26482 Series II. Operating temperature follows the connector series they mate with, not the backshell itself.

Straight, 45°, and 90° exits are available. Use an angled style when the harness has to turn behind the connector.
Shrink boot adaptorDetails · tap to expand
Used to finish unshielded cable with a heat-shrink boot. It has a groove for the boot lip to catch and enough room inside to route the cable with slack. A heat-shrink boot is one way to get environmental protection and strain relief together, and using the matching adaptor is what keeps later repair possible.
Crimp ring adaptorDetails · tap to expand
Used when a heat-shrink boot is wanted and the shield (screen) has to be terminated as well. The ring is crimped onto the backshell body, capturing the shield between them.
Band lock adaptorDetails · tap to expand
Another way to terminate the shield. A tempered band is tightened with a dedicated tool, and a heat-shrink boot can be fitted over it. Both crimp ring and band terminations have low DC resistance.
Pre-shield adaptorDetails · tap to expand
Comes with a length of braid already attached. It overlaps the cable braid for 360° shield contact, and the termination work is fast.

Quick clamps, strain relief clamps, grommet nuts, SQ adaptors, and ramp thread adaptors. Where saving weight comes first and only strain relief is needed, the clamps and nuts are the right choice.
M85049 is a specification that several Amphenol divisions build together (Aerospace · PCD · Socapex · Canada · Air LB), so the P/N alone does not identify which division made a given part. We therefore confirm the supply route on a P/N basis when quoting. ADMTEC keeps M85049 backshells and 2M shrink boots in Korean stock — send the connector P/N together with the cable outer diameter and we will confirm the matching shell size and cable exit size.
PCB Tail Contacts
PCB contacts — terminating straight into the board
Instead of crimping the rear of the connector onto wire, this termination solders straight into the board. The wiring between connector and board disappears, saving space and weight, so it is used in equipment where room is tight.
Contacts are ordered as a separate item from the connector. ADMTEC keeps both pins and sockets in Korean stock.
The connector styles that take PCB tail termination are the TVP00, TVP02, and TV07 lines. If you see those prefixes on a drawing, it is a PCB termination connector.

Among size 20 contacts the "10-497640" line has a 0.019" tail diameter, while "10-497596-055" has 0.025". Designing the board from the size marking alone can leave the hole dimension wrong, so always confirm on a P/N basis.

If your procurement document requires AS39029 or QPL-listed contacts, PCB tail contacts cannot meet it — in that case we will point you to crimp contacts instead. Tell us the required specification first and we will confirm which one applies. Amphenol keeps AS39029 contacts (Mil-Spec Contacts) and PCB contacts as separate product families. AS39029 presumes crimp termination, and terminating straight into a board is not a termination method that specification covers.
The coaxial contact 21-033592-031 is a different partDetails · tap to expand
It is not a PCB contact but a matched-impedance coaxial contact. Its mating socket is 21-033591-031, and the manufacturer states that 21-033591 series sockets mate only with 21-033592 series pins, so do not mix pins and sockets across families when ordering. It is 75 Ω, contact size 8, pin, and is used with 179DT · Belden 1855A · VDM230 cable. It applies to Series I (LJT-R), II (JT-R), and III (TV-R) alike.
The board design usually comes first, and once contact size and tail length are fixed the board hole diameter follows from them. Send us the connector P/N, the insert arrangement, and the tail length you need, and we will confirm the right contact.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are D38999 and MIL-DTL-38999 different?
They are the same. MIL-DTL-38999 is the name of the specification, and D38999 is the prefix of part numbers built to it. Some drawings still carry MIL-C-38999, the older designation.
Do Series I, II, and III mate with each other?
No. Series I and II use bayonet coupling and Series III uses a triple-start thread, so they do not fit together. If it has to mate with existing equipment, send us the P/N of the mating connector as well.
Do you supply commercial "38999 type" connectors?
Commercial 38999 type product is not MIL qualified and cannot be used where the procurement requirement is MIL-DTL-38999. ADMTEC confirms the required specification first and then points you to the genuine part that meets it.
Can you quote if I do not know the P/N?
Yes. A drawing, a photo of the existing part, information on the mating connector, or simply the contact count, contact size, and shell style you need is enough for us to match the specification.
Can you source discontinued (EOL) 38999 parts?
We will confirm whether the part is discontinued and what can replace it. Because these are specification parts, an interchangeable alternative often exists. Send us the original P/N and the equipment it goes into and we will look into it.
Can I get a C of C with the order?
Yes. We issue one for every order — what it covers and the original certificate are on the Authorized Distributor certification page.
